INTRODUCTION TO CORFU Corfu (Area 592 sq. km), the isle of the Phaeacians, is located at the northwest coast of the mainland Greece, where the Adriatic meets the Ionian Sea; it is the closest Greek island to Italy and almost brushes against Albania to the north. Corfu is the best known of the Ionian Islands for its sophistication and charm. Much of the island consists of olive groves, mountain and woodland. The majority of package holidays are based in the most developed resorts, but unspoiled terrain is often only a few minutes' walk away. On this cosmopolitan island, you’ll be able to combine relaxation with good times and a full nightlife, for Corfu is an international tourist centre, which can satisfy the demands of the most difficult visitor. CORFU TOWN Corfu Town, the capital, known as one of the most elegant island capitals in the whole of Greece, is built on a promontory that projects into the sea and is separated into a northern and a southern section. Although some of its finest buildings were destroyed in World War II, its two massive forts, the sixteenth-century church of Áyios Spyridhon and buildings dating from French and British administrations still remain intact. The town of Corfu is made up of completely dissimilar elements, left over from different civilisations with an impressive mix of architectural influences and colourful street life.
